Deployment to the North Atlantic

Deployment to the North Atlantic

Although the Rev. Canon Lt. (N) Greg McMullin has been a Navy Reserves chaplain for 20 years, it was just this spring that he had the chance of a deployment.

“At the end of February, I was offered the opportunity to be the chaplain for an operation aboard HMCS Montréal,” he said.

Operation REASSURANCE - EX Formidable Shield 2025 took place from April 22-June 5 in the North Atlantic in northern Norway and the Hebrides of Scotland. Usual military deployments are for six months, but this one was a six-week operation.

September 21st UN day for PEACE

A Call to Prayer - 21 Sept. united prayer for peace in Holy Land

The Church of England, the Catholic Bishops' Conference, the Methodists, Christian Aid, Sabeel Kairos, Quakers in Britain (and others) are calling for churches and Christian communities across the UK and the world to join the UN Day for World Peace in specifically praying for peace in the Holy Land.

We encourage you to hold a minute’s silence, either individually or during your services, on that Sunday and include a prayer, written for this by The Most Reverend Dr Hosam E. Naoum, Anglican Archbishop in Jerusalem, as part of your prayers.

Please let the Rev. Maria Shepherdson know if you are participating, so she can compile a list to send to Gazan Christians and to the Diocese of Jerusalem. maria.shepherdson@anglican.nb.ca

A Prayer for the Holy Land for 21 September 2025
Gracious Father, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came down from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the world:
In your mercy, provide for all those in Gaza and beyond who suffer from hunger and starvation, that they may be given both physical bread to nourish their bodies and heavenly bread to sustain their souls.
By the power of your Spirit, bring a speedy end to this cruel war, the release of all captives, care for the sick and wounded, comfort for those who have lost loved-ones, and the opening of a pathway for a just and lasting peace here in the very homeland where your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, ministered during his earthly life;
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen
The Most Reverend Dr. Hosam E. Naoum, Anglican Archbishop in Jerusalem, August 2025

MISINTREPRETATIONS OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS

~ When my twin daughters were young, I taught them to say this prayer before going to bed. As I listened outside their door, I could hear them say, "Give us this steak and daily bread, and forgive us our mattresses."

~ When I was a child, I learned this prayer as "Our Father, who are in Heaven, Howard be thy name." I always thought that was God's real name.

~ When I was younger, I believed the line was "Lead a snot into temptation." I thought I was praying for my little sister to get into trouble.

~ My mother spent her early childhood praying, "Hail Mary, full of grapes."

~ My son, who is in nursery school, said, "Our Father, who art in Heaven, how didja know my name?"

~ I remember thinking this prayer was "Give us this day our jelly bread."

~ When my husband was six years old, he thought a certain prayer was "He suffered under a bunch of violets." The real words were "under Pontius Pilate," but at that age, he didn't know better. To this day, we still snicker in church whenever that prayer is read.
