Quiet Day promises fun, fellowship

The Anglican Church Women’s (ACW) annual Quiet Day has some big plans.

It will be held Wednesday, Sept. 9 at St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Miramichi.

Jill Stewart, past president of the diocesan ACW, is one of the organizers, and she is busy preparing a day-long auction of sorts to raise money for Farraline Place.

“It’s going to run all day, from the time the ladies arrive,” she said.

There are 24 items to bid on, each wrapped so you don’t quite know what’s inside.

But there are clues. 

“You have to try to figure out what’s in it based on the bible verse that’s with it,” said Jill.

Marguerite Barry is helping Jill with the preparation, and Jill recruited Marguerite’s husband, the Rev. Bob Barry, to help with the bible verses. She provided a list of the prizes and left it to him to find scripture to match.

Ladies can buy tickets with which to bid. Five dollars buys 10 tickets; $10 buys 25 tickets.

“Hopefully people will come with at least $10 to spend,” she said.

Each item has a bag to put your tickets in and the bible verse attached.

Once the bidding is all over, a ticket will be drawn from each bag. The owner of the ticket gets the prize.

But before that, the winner will be asked to read the bible verse aloud, “so everyone there can see what went with the bible verse,” said Jill.

At the end, she will put all the bidders’ names in a bag and draw one name for a special prize. 

“We want to make the day fun!” said Jill.

Lunch will be provided, with donations accepted. To get a head count, diocesan secretary Carolyn Pellow will send out a memo to all deanery presidents in early September asking the branches for numbers.

Both the lunch donations and the auction ticket sales are cash only.

Apart from the auction, there will be registration and refreshments starting at 9 a.m. and a worship service at 10 a.m. The Ven. Perry Cooper will conduct the service. 

The day’s theme is 'Standing on the Promises Of God.' St. Mary’s church is wheelchair accessible and is located at 207 Wellington Street.
